Major Removal Works in Reading
Contact Us
Our latest project involved the complete removal of multiple industrial generators at a commercial site in Reading. This was a complex and logistically challenging job, spanning nearly a year from initial planning to final completion. The client approached us looking for an environmentally responsible solution to decommission and remove the aging generator system while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing site operations.
Before any physical work began, we carried out a thorough site assessment to understand the logistical constraints and risks involved. This included an in-depth survey of the generator room and surrounding areas to evaluate access points, structural limitations, and any potential hazards. Given the size and weight of the generators, lifting plans were meticulously developed to ensure safe extraction.
Additionally, we conducted a full risk assessment, taking into account environmental concerns such as fuel handling and disposal, as well as potential structural vulnerabilities within the building. Our team worked closely with the client to establish a clear schedule that aligned with their operational needs, ensuring minimal downtime for the site. Necessary permits and permissions were secured, and all required lifting equipment, including rollers, jacks, and cranes, were arranged well in advance to ensure a smooth process.
With the preparation phase complete, our team moved on to clearing the generator room. This involved stripping out all unnecessary loose items to create safe working conditions and prevent obstructions during the removal process. Each generator was unbolted from the floor and its fuel supply disconnected, following strict safety protocols to eliminate any risk of leaks or contamination.
Once isolated from its fuel source, each generator had to be disconnected from the mains power supply. Given the complexity of the electrical system, our qualified team carefully decommissioned the units, ensuring all live connections were properly terminated before proceeding with removal. Alongside this, we also stripped down the power distribution unit, safely removing and disposing of components that were no longer needed.
Due to the weight of the generators, specialized equipment was used to jack them up and place them onto rollers, allowing for controlled movement out of the building. This stage required precise coordination to maneuver the generators through tight spaces without causing structural damage.
Before removal could take place, we prepped the external area, ensuring clear and stable access for transportation. A full day was then dedicated to extracting the generators and the associated fuel tank. The removal process was carefully executed to avoid any damage to the surrounding environment, and once completed, we reinstated the site’s smoking shelter, restoring the area to its original condition.
Following the generator extraction, our team spent several days on additional site work. The existing exhaust systems were dismantled and removed, eliminating any redundant infrastructure. We then moved on to structural restoration, which included concreting the holes left behind from the generator installation to ensure a safe and secure floor.
Attention was also given to the end louvre, where modifications were made to seal and reinforce the space left by the removed ventilation system. Finally, we covered the pit that previously housed dead cables, ensuring the area was left in a safe and aesthetically pleasing condition.
Despite some challenges posed by the building itself, the project was successfully completed on schedule. We’re proud of the outcome and confident that the client now has a safer, cleaner, and more efficient space. This project demonstrates our ability to handle complex generator removals while prioritizing safety, environmental responsibility, and site restoration.

Food Shop Backup Generator
We recently removed an old standby generator from a well know retailer. The generator had to be moved from it's plant room, across the hallway and next to the louvre vents in the wall, ready to be lifted.
This one was a tight squeeze as there was still a lot of electrical equipment still installed in the hallway. Our careful team worked methodically, making sure to not damage the generator or any surrounding apparatus. This job took roughly 3 hours from start to finish.

Central London Removal
One of our latest jobs was a removal of a 400 KvA SDMO. The job required the disconnection of the generator from the mains connections and disconnecting the fuel supply, lowering the generator from a raised rooftop position, skating it across the rooftop to where the heavy duty crane could reach it, lowering all of the components safely, and removing off site safely back to our depot.
This job had to be completed ASAP for the client as a new generator had to be installed on the rooftop. With it being in central London and in a very busy area, the client had to have the generator ready for lifting by the weekend, as a road closure had to be booked for the crane. We was crunched for time but the team on site did an amazing job, working efficiently and swiftly, to get the generator removed for our client.
At Everything Generators, no job is too big or small. We can tackle any kind of job whether it is a simple collection, or all the way up to a full scale removal. Get in touch today with your requirements and a team member will be happy to help!
